Travel to the island can happen in two ways, via the short flight from dar-es-salaam or via the various ferries available in between the two. The flights from the mainland are quite frequent and are rather quick at 30-45 minutes. I think they are rather affordable at $100-$120 depending on how far in advance you book.

If you want the scenic ocean route, having the views of dar-es-salaam port and the lovely views of zanzibar port as you arrive, the ferries are a good option. Do note, it's advisable to use the safer ferries such as Azam. There are very modern and entry if limited to the ferry's capacity, some of the others aren't and the last thing you want is to be caught up in any difficulties on an over filled ferry. These are affordable too, as a foreigner you pay around $30 and you can get a nice seat with refreshments aboard. Get there early though, you don't want to miss out on a seat!
