Oasis is an understatement Jan 24, 2014
My partner and I just stayed the one night here after a wedding at Fitzroy Island.

Originally we were supposed to stay another night, however I stuffed up the date. Lucky for us, Helen was fantastic and amended our booking to their sister Hostel without charging any cancellation fee. She also arranged a staff member from that hostel to come and collect us from Travellers Oasis.

Travellers Oasis is exactly that, an Oasis. The hostel is a converted, renovated Queenslander. There is a pool in the middle of the hostel surrounded by lush palm trees. We only stayed the night so cannot comment on the fun factor however from what we saw the Hostel hosts bbq nights and arranges all the tours etc that a backpacker could want.

We stayed in the private double with balcony which for backpackers may be a tad expensive however for us it was a cheaper option than staying in a shitty three star hotel. The room did not have a private bathroom however we only shared with one or two other rooms and didn't have any run ins with other travellers.

The room was quiet and comfortable. Air con comes at a price however the room was cool enough with the ceiling fan.

The hostel is just across the road from the shopping centre however about a 15 minute walk from the Esplanade. They do run a shuttle bus every hour which is very convenient.

Extraordinary Hostel Dec 27, 2012
Honestly, we adored this hostel. We stayed there for four night over Christmas time. After debating whether to treat ourselves and spend Christmas in a nice hotel, we decided on this hostel because the atmosphere in hostels is usually better and we wanted to be around fellow backpackers who were also away from home for the festive season!

Traveller's Oasis is about a fifteen minute walk from the lagoon (makeshift beach area as Cairns has no beach to speak of) and the promenade. However, it is only a minute walk from the shopping centre and Cole's supermarket and the Cairns train station.

The staff are exceptional! The manager, Helen, has been in Australia for four years because she 'fell in love with the reef'. She won an award and got mentioned in the local newspaper for her expertise in customer service. She always has a smile for everyone and makes a special effort to get to know everyone's names, a very difficult talent as some people come and go so quickly! All of the staff are friendly and very knowledgeable about the trips you can do around the area.

The reception is open from about 8am-12pm then from 4pm to 9pm. So they have a midday siesta so to speak! The internet in the reception costs 1 Aussie dollar for fifteen minutes. The WIFI costs $5 for the day (we were quite irritated by this but apparently Australia is notorious for charging for WIFI). The air con in most of the rooms costs $1 for 3 hours. Pretty much everything costs money! Although, there is a very well-equipped kitchen, a BBQ that anyone can use, copious amounts of clean bathrooms and shower rooms. The dorms don't have bunk beds, just single beds, which is good. The common area is scattered with comfortable hammocks, you can sleep in these for $12 instead of getting a room! There's a small but clean pool. There's a good book exchange.

They also have BBQ nights every Sunday where you get driven up to the other hostel they own called Tropic Days where you get to eat kangaroo, emu, fish and crocodile. Lots of salads too for $12. With that you also get a free drink voucher for the local pub, the Woolshed. Pizza night is on Thursdays, it costs $10.

On Christmas day the owner, his wife and his two daughters came to the hostel with tonnes of food, free beer and champagne to wish us all a Merry Christmas.

You meet loads of people here, without it being a big party hostel. It's quite a relaxing atmosphere.

I would absolutely, without a doubt recommend this place to everyone.

Really friendly hostel in lovely Cairns Mar 04, 2011
Such a nice place to stay. The people are so friendly and accomodating. I turned up on the door and they managed to squeeze me in. The staff are really friendly and it's a hard place not to make friends - everyone seems to know everyone after a couple of days being there. The rooms are really comfortable and cosy, no bunk beds in the dorms so quite a nice change. Minibus goes into the town regularly throughout the day and they also have nights out and vouchers for food in one of the local pubs. They even do pick ups to and from the airport. When I get back to Oz eventually I will be going back!! :)

Such a nice place, I stayed at their sister hostel Tropic Days but honestly the nicest bunch of people. You felt like you knew most of the staff by the 2nd day and they always arranged to go out. Very clean and cosy rooms and they always had stuff going on in the afternoon. Well worth a visit for anyone visiting Cairns.
