How to get from Udon Thani Airport to Vientiane Feb 06, 2010
After leaving the baggage pickup, just to the right of the exit is a booth with tickets for 80 baht to the town centre and 200 baht to the Thai border. Even if I hadn't seen the booth (very difficult to miss) I wouldn't have missed the man flagging me over.
The company uses minibuses which leave when full. Since this is a popular way to get to Laos, our bus filled up within a few minutes.
The ride to the border takes about 45 minutes. Once at the border, the bus leaves you and you walk through the departure point, which is a few metres away from where the bus drops you off. If you need anything from 7 11 there's one about 100 metres back that you can go to before exiting Thailand.
Once through immigration there is a small booth selling bus tickets for 20 baht. You can not walk across the bridge so this is the only option. The bus seems to leave every 10 minutes or so.
That bus drops you off at Laos Immigration. If you don't have a visa, go to the "Visa on Arrival" booth where you receive two forms, which you hand in completed, along with the required visa fee ($US preferred but you can pay Thai Baht at whatever exchange rate they quote you that day), your passport and a passport sized photo. For Canadians its US$42 plus I had to pay an extra US$1 for an "overtime" fee because it was a weekend.
About 10 minutes later you receive your passport with the visa inside and also the immigration stamp so you do not have to stand in line at immigration again.
We paid 200 baht for 3 of us in a shared van that already had other passengers. The van dropped us off directly at our accommodation in Vientiane.
The entire process from landing at the airport to arriving at the accommodation was about 2.5 hours.
