When in Fuengirola, which is a really touristy place, dare to get out and see some of the surroundings! For example take the bus to Mijas, a village up in the mountains, only 20 minutes from Fuengirola bus station - cheap tickets and easy accessible. Mijas is a beautiful place and totally different from Fuengirola!

If you want to see a bigger city, take the train or bus to Málaga. By train it takes about half an hour and by bus about 45 mins. Lovely city with friendly, helping people. Great shopping and beautiful sights - check out the Plaza del Toro! :) Train to Málaga costs only EUR 2,60, and bus EUR 1,60.

In Fuengirola, pay a visit to the local market on Tuesdays. Very interesting and fun - a way to see how the Spaniards really are! Cheap goods and fresh fruits and veggies! :) Be on time though, the market opens at about 9 a.m. and that is the best time to stroll around - about 10.30 a.m. lots of people show up and it's REALLY crowded - which means lots of pickpockets...

Don't forget Sohail Castle built by the Moors in 1485 (although the site is much older). There are Roman ruins in the Finca El Secretario. There is the annual Feria early in October which is two weeks of dancing, singing, drinking, parading, horse riding and dressing up in flamenco suits.

I was in Mijas - less than a month ago and I liked it too. I have pictures of that on my site.
