Mariastern Abbey, Banja Luka Mar 07, 2018
Mariastern Abbey or St. Marry Star (Croatian: Opatija Marija Zvijezda) is Trappist abbey in Banja Luka. It is a place of worship and history. The Trappists are special order of Catholic priests and they originated from the French monastery Notre Dame de La Trappe from Normandy hence its name.

Within religious complex central focus is on Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Interesting is mention that this is the only Trappist monastery in Southeastern Europe. They arrived in the surrounding of Banja Luka in 1869. In the time of their arriving, there are Ottomans in the rule so they first need to obtain permission from the Ottoman government to establish a community in this area. They start was humble and for the first time, there was a small wooden church that you can still find in their courtyard.

Soon they build a real agricultural and industrial complex. They start an industry in Banja Luka. They were known from their monastery, power station, beer, cheese, pasta, fabric, mill, printing house, brickyard, blacksmith’s workshop, quarry, bakery etc.

At the beginning of the 20th century, with 219 monks, the Abbey was the largest Trappist abbey in the world.

But today it is the smallest, with only two monks.
