Probably most of you when you hear the name Transylvania you think Dracula.
Beside the very famous Bram Stoker’s vampire legend here are a few things you should know about this place.
Transylvania is a region in the North-West of Romania covering about 101,000 square kilometers (39,000 square miles) with a population around 7.4 million people. Beside the Romanian majority there are other communities like Hungarians (about 19%), Gypsies (3%), German (0,5%) and Serb (0,2%). The biggest cities are Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara and Brasov.
Transylvania is also famous for it’s medieval Saxon cities — the “Siebenbürgen” in German — gems of old world architecture, with narrow alleys leading to haunting stairways and hidden courtyards.
With its splendid mountain scenery and alpine peaks, some of the best hiking and skiing resorts, rural villages and a rich traditional background Transylvania is truly a great experience.
But no other place is so easily identified with vampires, phantoms and bloody scenes as Bargau. This was the wild and mysterious location chosen by Francis Ford Coppola for his film "Dracula".
In this area is located also the Dracula's Castle built by Mircea cel Batran, Vlad's grandfather. The medieval Castle still continues today to be surrounded by a dark and sinister atmosphere.
Not far away is Sighisoara, the pearl of Transylvania, one of a very few medieval citadels still inhabited and included in UNESCO World Heritages.

Another day, another drive to a small Transylvanian town. Driving in Romania has been more of a chore than a fun road-trip adventure. Even the major roads are often only two-lanes, frequently interrupted by spans of construction. Our drive to Sinaia was just 43 km (27 miles) but it took about an ho…
