Sep 02, 2006Hi Grubi, English is not a problem in HK. Pretty much everyone can speak it, apart from the cabbies. All the signs are in English first followed by Chinese. HK is so easy to get around and you should never get lost. If you ever do, just hail a cab, which are really cheap. Infact the transport system in HK has to got to be one of the most efficent and cheapest in the modernised world. The MTR is a breeze. I personally found people to be polite and friendly and I was never worried about my safety once. You will love it. I can give you some good recommendations for places to visit if you wish. Enjoy

This is a little rechargeable card you use to catch public transport (similar, for those of you in London, to the oyster card - or the new smartrider cards being introduced in Perth). Hong Kong's taken this concept a great deal further however, and you can use your card to pay for a variety of things… Vertical town. |

Upon our arrival we extracted money from an ATM and checking the transport options to get to the Hostel at Causeway Bay it was obvious that the one hour journey was way cheaper by bus over taxi or train. Thought that it would be a real hassle dragging suitcases on wheels onto a bus but the airport… Oriental flavours |

There are actually 3 modes of transportation from the airport.
1. By BUS, which is the most economical way at 33HKD, and stops at the a few bus points in Kowloon and Hongkong Island .
2. By Taxi, which is the most expensive, and
3. By TRAIN • or the Airport Express which… Day 1 – Good things come to those who wait. |

'backup&homebrew solution' for my nds - since they all get imported
from hong kong anyway i hoped to get a good price
but first: transport in hong kong... is gorgeous! you buy a smart card
called octopus which is valid on everything, even the ferries, and just
use it oyster card style on the devices. but you can also use the card
to pay in 7-elevens, mcdonalds, photo… hong kong shopping & people watching |

…aim: to get a 3 day tourist train pass ($220HK which gets you three days unlimited travel on the mtr $20 worth of credit for other transport AND one trip on the airport line). First station I came to was Tsim Sha Tsui (pron: chim sha cheway) so that's where I got my ticket (incidentally, I spent far more time at that station while I was in transit then I did anywhere… Jade markets, and buildings, and Disney, oh my! |
