Transport to/from Chennai Airport
Transport to/from Chennai Airport Reviews
Avoid the traffic jam and pay a fraction of the price by using the train Jan 31, 2011
Taxis to/from Chennai Airport to the city cost around INR350. However the train is only INR6 (about EUR 10 cents)!! It's much more tranquil than being stuck in the Chennai traffic (unless you're travelling peak hours on the train).
AIRPORT TO CITY
Upon arrival, the train station is a bit hard to find. It is accessed through the carpark in front of the original terminal building (which is flanked by the steel and glass ones being built on both sides).
If you are lucky you'll see a sign "Subway to Tirusulam" which will take you under the busy road and flyover to the ticketing desk of the station. All ticketing is based on honesty system ... there must be some random checks that I haven't seen.
The train departs from Platform 1 to Chennai (going through the various stations). Make sure you don't accidentally board the First Class compartment as you could be fined for not having the proper ticket.
CITY TO AIRPORT
From Chennai to the Airport, my knowledge is only limited to boarding at Egmore Station. Trains depart Platform 10. Tickets are purchased from the newish building beyond Platform 11.
Get off at Tirusulam and you'll see the Airport terminal building; the preceding station is Minambakkam.
Trains leave every 10 minutes for most of the day and the journey takes about 30 minutes. Frequency is reduce to about every 20 minutes during the early morning (starting around 4am) or late night.
Useful hotels directly in front of Egmore Station include Chandra Park, Raj Residency and Hotel Victoria.
