I didn't take the train from Shanghai (with the exception of the Transrapid (maglev)) but I did travel from Xi'an to Beijing by train.  It's been a great experience.  First class is very, very comfortable (and cheap for us).  Those beds are pretty long, soft and warm.

First I thought why should I travel first class, but for tourists it's better, second class are to many beds, so it's pretty noisy.  The beds are not as comfortable.

Have fun, I hope it helps.

I've traveled in both classes on overnight trains. PAY THE EXTRA RMB & GO WITH THE SOFT SLEEPER (first-class)!

Take a train somwehere.  I hear they're pretty crazy/uncomfortable, but it's a great experience to tell people about!

Also, go eat hot pot as often as possible =).

I must say my first class ticket was super cheap and super comfortable. We left Shanghai st night and when I woke up we were in Peking.
But the I enjoyed the wooden seats as well, so I know what you are talking about. It was a real adventure.

Hmm... good to know. How big is the full sleeper bed? Also, any word on the sleeper busses? I hear they are good times too =).

The train I took was actually super comfortable, a Canadian-made Bombardier train. I travelled to Beijing and it was much better than if I had taken a plane since I had a full sleeper, and woke up in Beijing.

train to Xi’an that night. Train tickets as I’ve read from reviews and blogs, can run out pretty fast especially with the Spring Festival nearing yet I got a hard sleeper for 357 CNY for that night going to Xi’an. Yay, felt… Bye Shanghai...

…          Today is our last day in Shanghai, and we have to be checked out of the room by 2 o'clock, yet our 37 hour train ride to Chengdu does not depart until 9:02 pm. Since we do not care to spend a day and a half on a train ride feeling sticky from the Shanghai humidity, we resolve to spend much of the day in and around our air-conditioned… Last Day in Shanghai

we were meant to leave xian the following day but the train was booked until the 19th so we hung around xian, looking around the muslim quarter, shopping in the flea markets and cycling a tandem around the town walls (14km of them!).  we then got the overnight train to shanghai, which despite my looking… xian-shangai-pang xiang-nanning

…Still, I was rather thrilled about getting a free ride, even though I had to spend another sleepless night on an over-crowded train, not to mention, have to once again eat instant cup-o-noodles for every meal during the entire ride. Yes, the train was yet again, packed to the limits, but I guess that’s normal here.  Thinking back now at the experience, can’t help… Shanghai, China

Since we would be departing Shanghai on Friday, we needed to purchase our train tickets to Chengdu. Unlike our experiences with the Eurail, Chinese train tickets cannot be purchased in advance from the states. Therefore, I have had numerous sleepless nights worrying about whether or not we would be able to obtain the necessary tickets I had planned… Jade Buddha Temple and the French Concession
