Trahter Valge Hobu Johvi Reviews
Not really ready but they opened their doors for us Sep 24, 2012
We had been driving from Narva and stopped at numerous sites until we felt like having lunch. There were several parts of the highway that were being rebuilt and at one of these places near Johvi, we saw a sight with a place to eat. We followed the signs and ended up at a tavern named Valge Hobu.
The place looked nice but closed, and we went in anyway and met some builders doing some cables for some lighting. We asked if they knew if they were open and they called for the owner. The owner came by but his English was that great and after some time he came out from he kitchen and said that they could serve soup and fish or meat. We were hungry so we said okay and we were shown upstairs in a backroom where there was a huge restaurant.
The "White Horse" tavern is located on the 160th kilometer highway from Tallinn to Narva near Jõhvi town. The tavern is located on the territory of former manorial estate Edise. The Edise village was first mentioned in historical files back in 1241, and the area was during Middle Ages one of the most important links of the fortification zone between Alutaguse forests and the Gulf of Finland.
The huge tavern has probably been built up of the stones that remained after demolition of the old castle. The “drying barn” that had been preserved until the present time, was rebuilt in 1980 into the tavern and named "White Horse". The have built the interior as it was from the middle ages and I could imagine that this place could be pretty cozy in the evenings.
Our meal was fair a very cheap, we paid 20 euro for the both of us having two dishes and some sparkling water.
