Traffic cameras and speed trap help Jul 25, 2011
Welcome to'll receive a ticket in the mail by the time you get back home! If you enter DC via car from the BW Parkway, you can get 4 tickets in less than a mile!

Sometimes, there's a mobile speed trap (police car or unmarked car with a camera sitting on a stool just ahead of it) just as the highway ends and empties onto NY Ave. The arboretum will be on your left and there will be a Checkers on your right and your first traffic light. So, check out your right hand side for a car. As you cross the light that is Bladensburg Road at the Checkers and Exxon, if the light turns red while you cross the intersection, you will get caught by the red light camera (#2!). As you drive a few more blocks, there will be an overpass, and just after that, there will be a stationary speed trap camera catching anyone going over 35 mph. (#3). Stationary speed traps are a little easier to spot as the asphalt will have horizontal lines on the lanes. If you continue going on NY avenue, as you cross Florida Ave, the Wendy's will be on your right, and there is a stationary camera at that light if you run it.

Now that I think about it, as you continue down NY ave, there's another camera at North Capitol and another a the entrance to the NY ave tunnel. There are several options to get tickets across DC and it's bad enough the locals can sometimes get caught by them, but visitors who don't know where they are can get caught by police cars, unmarked car, and stationary cameras. Be careful and keep your eyes peeled!

Great write up! I hardly ever drive in the city, but I do know where all the ones on my normal routes are.
