Towne Hotel Nassau Reviews
One of the few hotels in the center May 29, 2014
Nassau is a very touristy city - but unlike most other cities there aren’t many hotels in the center. Everybody seems to sleep onboard the cruise ships which are visiting the harbor everyday unloading thousands of people or they sleep in one of the resorts on Paradise Island or the western part of the island. So when it comes to centrally located hotels in Nassau there really isn’t that many and our options were further minimized by price considerations so we ended up staying at the Towne Hotel which has a great location and is one of the few hotels in Bahamas which has a price tag of less than 100 dollars including tax for a double room with air-condition.
The hotel is located just a short walk from the few central streets in the old town of Nassau and just at the end of the street of the hotel you find the Government House and around the corner from the Government House is the Graycliff Cigar CO if you need the best cigars in the world outside Cuba. The street out in front is fairly quite since it isn’t one of the two streets which seems to take all the traffic going through the central part of Nassau. This is a good thing since the windows didn’t keep out sound very well so any noise from the street will easily bother you during the night.
The hotel is in a pretty old building and there is a balcony to most if not all the rooms - out balcony was facing the street in front of the hotel and you could in principle sit out there and enjoy life passing by. But the sun is on the balcony so it tended to be too hot to actually use the balcony during the day. the room is fairly small but functional with what you would expect like a bed and a couple of chairs and a table and obviously a television which could easily pick up all major US television channels - which seems to be a number one requirement for all hotels in Caribbean since the majority of the tourist comes from the USA.
The hotel was a bit run down but there was hot water in the bathroom which was a definite plus since it doesn’t seem to be the case on all the hotels in the cheaper end of the price range in this part of the world. Unfortunately the air-condition seemed to be a bit dated as well and didn’t really work optimal so the room was a bit hot during the night.
There was a small swimming pool at the hotel but it was so small that nobody seemed to even try to get into the water. There was breakfast included at the hotel in the morning from 7.30 in the morning - and do not come before. We accidently came a bit early one day since we thought breakfast started at 7 and we were told off by the staff that hadn’t finished her preparations for the breakfast.
There is free Wi-Fi in the rooms and down in the lobby there is a couple of computer which the guest can use if they like. Furthermore there are a small restaurant and bar which serves decent food during the lunch we had at the hotel and pretty cheap Bahamas Mama cocktails. Down in the lobby is a cute big parrot which looks out over the lobby but doesn’t seem to be too sociable and interested in the guest.

Old hotel at the centre May 30, 2014
We have pre book the room at this place since the hotel price in this country is on the high side and this hotel fit our budget and right at the centre of town. We take taxi from the airport to the hotel which cost usd24. The hotel itself cost usd100 per night inclusive breakfast.
The entrance door of the hotel was a bit strange, we need to buzz in to be able to go inside and have to wait until the reception open the door by automatic buzzer. The reception was not much of the talker and was busy on the phone when we arrived. After filling the form and get a key, the bellboy carried our bags to the room which was located at the first floor – no elevator in this place, so we have to go through the stairways.
The room itself was simple and the hotel building was old – almost run down but there is a charm on this place, especially the colourful residence parrot which located at the centre of the lobby and everyday it always busy with itself – and we had good time talking with it even though the parrot did not say much.
There was one double bed in the room, a couple of chairs and desk, cupboard, flat screen television and in front of the room were a small balcony which was connected with other room as well. There were a couple of chairs in the balcony in front of our room with one of the chair was broken and if you sit there – probably your ass would goes down pretty quickly to the floor. I inspected other chairs at the next door balcony (since no separation at it), and it seems one of the chairs (two chairs at each balcony) has big hole in the middle. We tempted to take the good chairs to our balcony and change the broken one, but we did not do it.
Anyway, the balcony was facing the street below and it was pretty good for people watch. However, we did not use the balcony while we stay there for a couple of nights, since the sun was really hot directed toward the balcony and the room, and we mostly out during the day to explore the city. In addition to this, I was afraid the balcony would collapse, since we could see from the outside of the hotel, the wall structure of the balcony was at a very strange shape – part of the balcony at the edge which supported the wall was learn down a lot compare with the other.
Plenty minus points from this hotel such as:
1. The mattress was not comfortable, it was creaking every time we move and I can feel the spring under me.
2. The air condition was not work properly and it was quite noisy as well. We ended up using both the air condition and the fan to cool the room.
3. It was dark inside the room even though we turn all the lights. Ended up, I open the bathroom door to let it brighten the bedroom.
Breakfast spread in the morning was adequate and filling. For a couple of nights stay was okay but no longer than that.
