A bit of advice Mar 24, 2012
A highly recommended place to turn off if this is your inaugural visit to the state of Maine and you are driving north out of Portland. The center is conveniently located just off of exit 17 on I-295, the road you will probably be taking if you are aiming for anything in the mid-coast region, or possibly even Bar Harbor (I-95 is actually a little faster, but very dull in comparison).

If it is information you seek, the center features a comfortable lobby chock full of pamphlets and maps to offer suggestions, and there are usually several knowledgeable attendants behind the counter to provide thorough responses to your questions. Even though I’ve witnessed the parking lot fairly jammed during peak season, plenty of spaces are provided and it is easy to get in and out of.

The center also features the standard conveniences you expect from a highway rest stop. Clean lavatory facilities, a separate building with vending machines and a few grassy knolls to walk the pooch. A pleasant oasis if you just got off the plane and need to energize before making the big push to whatever your final destination might be in this great state – free wifi is even available at the center. Hungry? Just north on Coastal One is a nicer restaurant (Muddy Rudder) and right beyond that an inexpensive, but top notch diner (Freeport Café). If you continue up Coastal One you’ll be in Freeport in no time, where there are tons of eating options, retail stores, and of course...traffic.
