Tour du Doyenné Chalon-sur-Saone Reviews
The strange fate of Chalon's symbol ,saved thanks to an American billionaire Aug 15, 2010
This 15th century Belfry stands now on St Laurent island, nicknamed Love island!,but stood in earlier days behind Saint Vincent cathedral. It enabled the cathedral's doyen to reach his appartments( a kind of backstairs).
Ruined,it was dismanteled and the remaining stones transported to Paris at the beginning of the 20th century, were bought by a Parisian antics dealer and put up in auctions.
Finally an American billionaire,Franck Jay Gould was persuaded by the president of the French Art Preservation association to pay to have the tower rebuilt in Chalon sur Sâone. The reconstruction was completed in 1926 and the next year,F.J. Gould climbed the 105 steps and admired the city's panorama.
At its feet since the 60's,a magnificent flower bed is produced with different floreal pattern each year.It is a kind of symbol of Chalon.
This year is the fiftiest anniversary of the flowerbed and people may see an exhibition in the Tourism Office till the 15th September.
