Toruń Vacation Guide
Toruń is a city of a little over 200 thousand inhabitants on the banks of the Vistula River in Northern Poland, nearly three hours from Warsaw by train. This is debatable, but depending upon the calculation method used, this beautiful medieval city is the geographical center of Europe.
Toruń is the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus and is home to the Nicolaus Copernicus University. Teutonic knights built a castle here in 1230, and in medieval times this was a mostly German speaking trade center.
The city preserves many monuments from the middle ages as well as many 20th century monuments. Toruń avoided significant destruction in WWII, so important monuments are originals rather than reconstructions, and the city layout from medieval times is conserved almost intact. It is regarded as having the largest number of preserved Gothic residences in Poland.
With it's quiet cobblestone streets and beautiful monuments, this university city is well worth visiting. While there, don't forget to try Pierniki - traditional gingerbread that Toruń is famous for.
