Torreon is more of an industrial city than a tourist destination, it's very much "Americanized" you drive through the city and what you mostly see is "US" chain restaurants and stores like McDonalds, Chili's, Applebee's, as well as good ol' Walmart. Even though in many ways it feels like you are in an US city it is still very much Mexican and some rules just don't apply. For example, small children don't use car seats, there really isn't any room for them in the little cars they drive down there. I would say that about 60% of cars down there are little volskwagens, or "slug bugs" as my girls like to call them! You see kids riding in the back of pick-up trucks, sitting on the edges. Mexican houses don't usually have yards, many Mexican barrios are made up of "row-houses", they distinguish property lines by changing the color of paint. At night all the neighbors bring out chairs to their front door and chat, and greet passersby, while the kids play on the sidewalk.
