Located in the heart of Venice around Saint Mark’s Square, the Torre dell' Orologio is incredibly iconic within the local landscape. It was built just over five hundred years ago, and apart from telling everyone the hour of the day, it reflects the Zodiac sign that is presently dominant and the moon’s current phase. Pretty impressive stuff for a medieval clock. Although it is rather symbolic and beautiful these days, the clock is a wonderful insight into Venice’s past, as the clock was important to the seafaring industry that grew up on the waters of Venice. For example, when seamen set off on their journey from the Grand Canal which is nearby, they could rely on the clock to help them to decide when the most favourable time to set out would be. Furthermore, the clock was declared as the official register of time for Venice in the nineteenth century - every other clock was set according to this one. A rather beautiful and important sight in Venice that is well worth a deeper look.
