The House of Top Karen Nov 05, 2010
I had the good luck to be invited to have lunch inside at The House of Top Karen where the grandson of Top Karen had made a nice lunch with both beers and snaps made of local berries. The Grandson had renovated the house some years ago and is today running a small restaurant at the place that usually is closed at this times a year, but we were lucky to be invited inside and had a great afternoon.
The house of Top Karen is a local treasure which Rebild Society also wishes to preserve. The house of Top Karen was the only house in the area when the National Park opened in 1912. Top Karen was an old woman who quickly spotted that people were thirsty and hungry after walking the hills; so it didn’t take her long before she understood that she could run a small tavern for visitors and hikers in Rebild.
Top Karen quickly became famous for her food and drinks and everybody liked her; even the Danish would come by and visit her for food and drinks when he was in the area.
Top Karen House served as a tavern until Karen's death in 1929; she was then 86 years old. The house's interior says everything about the house's history. The walls are a gallery of framed pictures and papers that carefully documenting the experiences people through the ages have had in Rebild.
