Tonopah Overview

The town was originally build on the discovery of gold. Its a rough, remote life, surrounded by harsh deserts, snakes, sagebrush and a few wild mustangs. But today, a good portion of the town survives on military contracts in some of the nearby Air Force installations.

Tonopah has been around since the early gold rush. It has boomed and waned, most likely a dozen times. But back in its relatively early years, in 1908 it was a featured stop on the 1908 Great Race. It was the only populated place for hundreds of miles. Not that it may be that much different today, but one of the differences were the modern conveniences and amenities.

Back then, paved roads were a fantasy. Road side gas stations or mechanics were unheard of. And a lively cheering crowd was probably just a dream. Hundreds, if not thousands of miles of hard road, snow, quicksand, river crossings, etc. awaited contestants as they went from New York to Paris via the American West, then Asia and Russia.
