Plenty of visitors walk the Tongariro track through Tongariro National Park in the middle of the North Island.  We went there a couple of times as scouts and spent the weekend sleeping in the Dept of Conservation hut at Mangatapopo.  It's a really great area and lots of fun in both summer…
