Tongariro Crossing Mar 09, 2011
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing in Tongariro National Park is one of New Zealands most spectacular tramping tracks, and is considered the most popular one-day tramp in New Zealand. The Tongariro National Park is a World Heritage site which has the distinction of dual status, as it has been acknowledged for both its natural and cultural significance.

The crossing passes over the volcanic terrain of the multi-cratered active volcano Mt. Tongariro passing the eastern base of Mt Ngauruhoe which can optionally be climbed as a side trip.

The 19.4 km walk is renowned for its barren yet beautiful "moon like" volcanic landscape, unusual geological features, visible volcanic activity and views of the surrounding countryside below.

It was stunning and absolutely amazing....highly recommended to everyone visiting the north part of NZ!!!!!

Tongariro Crossing Mar 06, 2011
What an amazing day trip.

I am by no means an avid hiker but I needed to tick this off my bucket list.

A 20km walk made easy by stunning landscapes & scenery which changes over every hill.

No trip to NZ would be complete without doing this on a fine day.

Carlsberg Don't Do New Zealand Hikes..... Feb 22, 2010
Carlsberg do not do hikes around in New Zealand, if they did, they would probably be the Tongariro Crossing!

Honestly, the idea of walking up and down several volcanoes over a 18.5km trek from one bus at 5.30 am in order to reaach the next bus 6-9 hours later, may not appeal to everyone....but this one should.

It is a challenge.

It is an adventure.

It is an unforgettable experience with awe inspiring views.

The walk takes in so many different types of terrain, starting off with a nice level walk towards the base of the mountains before being confronted by the Devil's Staircase.

Dont worry, its just a name, it is far worse than it sounds. 40 minutes to an hour of grueling steps taking you up the side of the mountains leading to the South Crater.

If you have the time, you will find yourself at the base of Mount Ngauruhoe.....for those who do not know, that is the volcanic behemoth that Frodo & Sam spent 3 long movies to reach, I bet you can beat their time!!

From hear, you have an almost level walk through the South Crater to recupperate a little. On the far side is another steep climb to the Red Crater. On a clear day, as with all parts of the crossing, you will get amazing views. On the ridge of the Red Crater you will see the sublime Emerald Lakes.

Descending from the Red Crater, yes I did say descending, take care on the steep scree slope. I saw many people fall here, I find side stepping down to be the safest way & quickest.

Now you go around the Central Crater and past the beautiful Blue Lake. Just a side note here, I saw many people getting into each of the lakes as they do look lovely but bear in mind that they are very sacred to the Maori people.

You then climb once more up the North Crater and then feel free to rejoice knowing that it is all pretty much downhill from here.

The terrain has now changed once more to lush hill sides before descending to the rain forest. There is a hut halfway down which serves as a great lunch spot. The rainforest is a little deceiving as most think its the finish line but really its about 3km away through a very winding forest with plenty of ups and downs.

Honestly, this is an amazing day. Awesome views. 100% rewarding at the finish line.

You do need to have a good level of fitness going into this one. I have heard of many people not finishing but most of them were off on the beer the night before. I completed the walk in well under the 6 hours, however.

The Tongariro Crossing is an awesome day hike and probably one of the most popular in all of New Zealand. It takes anywhere between 6-9 hours depending on your ability and unless you train everyday will not be able to walk the day after the hike!!!

The track covers all types of terrain and probably close to all 4 seasons too. I think we experienced warmth and sun, then rain, and snow flurries, and finally into a wet rain forest type climate. Be prepared by bringing both cold and warm weather clothing! You will hike past volcanoes and sulphuric pools and be completed amazed every few minutes of the track!

You get picked up at a car park for about $20 NZD (roundtrip) and dropped off at the trailhead. Once you get to the finishing point there are shuttles that take you back to the car park every hour or so.
