Tong Tong Fair The Hague Reviews
Indonesian art, food and people where ever you look Jun 04, 2011
First time I've been to the Tong Tong Fair (formerly known as the Pasar Malam Besar) and I'm sure I'll go back next year. Hopefully I'll be able to take my partner some day.
Okay, what you'll find here is very simple: just about everything about the Indo culture. That's the culture of people with combined Indonesian and European heritage. So most of the objects you'll see are Indonesian.
Because we arrived around lunch time we went too the food corner first. I've never had such delicious Indonesian food before. I've had a green drink, with something like rice in it. Taste was great, but about 50% of Western people won't like it... Luckely for me I did :D
The food was great, first time for goat meat! Loved it! Even though I don't like sheep or lamb.
After having a warm lunch we went for the shops. There is one main hall (the Pasar Besar if I'm not mistaken) and one section for pure Indonesian products. The main hall and the food sections all have Thai and Malaysian influences too.
Because the Fair is build like a city there are streets, squares and theatres. All streets and squares are named. Above the streets are banners pointing out specifik destinations.
Too summarice what you'll be able to do and buy here: Indonesian food, dito drinks, statues, bowls, clothing, herbs, paintings, lamps, and much more. You can attend work shops, watch dances, listen to music, watch plays and follow debates.
I've been here for over 4 hours and I'm confinced I haven't seen it all yet.
