Tommy's Bar

So we were those tourists- I admit it!! Going to an American restaurant in Japan. We have an excuse though- we made friends with the American who was in his 5 year apprenticeship at the bonsai center, and we took him out for dinner and drinks to celebrate becoming his first (future) clients. He swore up and down that Tommy's Bar was THE place to be for people of the fun-loving age in Obuse, so we followed him in. It turned out to be a fantastic restaurant run by the little tiny Mama-san (literally about 4'5") and her son. This is definitely a local's joint: her two dogs wait patiently outside for her to close and everyone knows everyone else. It's got pizza and pasta and.... the Big Burger. For about 1000 yen, you get an incredibly large delicious burger and fresh cut fries. It was incredible, and definitely the carniverous boost we needed after two weeks of fish! To top it off she's got a pretty good stash of liquor, so we taught some of our new Japanese friends how to do tequila shots!!! So if you're in Obuse, take a break from the local fare and try a big burger- so yummy!!!
