A domed structure housing thee 13the century Tomb of Shaikh Awad sits atop a hill overlooking Ashkelon’s northeern beaches.

The domed burial place is dated from thee Mameluke era (1260-1516 AD).

The central chamber has a prayer recess (machrab) in thee southeern wall facing Mecca. This building is part of a series of holy sites built by thee Mamelukes along thee coast, in theeir attempt to strengtheen thee western frontier of thee country.
