A few things I've noticed during my first day in Japan, that I find interesting:Taxi drivers all wear suits, and Taxi doors automatically open for you.People are exceedingly friendly and customer service is better than any other place I've seen, yet people are not tipped. There is an obsession with things French. Lots of high-end boutique stores, cafes, and pastry shops utilize French names and language. It is considered rude to talk on your cell phone on buses or trainsMany places don't open u...

.. to spend two days and one night in the city with my backpack and no plans of sleeping at all.  To have enough energy, I knew I had to have lots of sleep before I venture off but I was extremely excited that I just couldn't shut off my brain about my trip so I ended up having only a few hours of rest, just enough to make me feel like not going anymore for feeling too sleepy. But I still fought off the laziness and congratulations to myself! I biked my way to ...

Today we are leaving Kyoto for Tokyo on the Nozomi bullet train. Kevin is flying home while I continue to Taiwan!Since our hotel in Kyoto is right above the train station, it was a short walk to the platform. We took the fast Nozomi bullet train from Kyoto to Tokyo, with very few stops. In the bullet trains, you can feel the train banking when it makes a long curved turn, pretty neat! At Tokyo station, we got on the Narita airport express to go to the airport. We were plenty early for our fli...

We had our hotel concierge call to reserve us tickets fot a Yakult Swallows baseball game tonight.    Doug and Dave are big Yankee fans, while Lee and I are Red Sox fans...so there was lots of good natured ribbing between us throughout the trip.  Since both teams feature Japanese stars, the Yankee-Red Sox series was televised here (all games won by the Sox, thank you!)  and we got to watch early in the morning thanks to the time difference.   We wanted to ch...

I decided to spend a few days in Tokyo and met up with an old school friend who was visiting Japan for skiing. The first day I headed into Tokyo it decided to snow and i mean snow big time.  I HATE SNOW.....being from the sunny warm Gold Coast in Australia where we never even get winter and you can still swim in winter time the snow is one thing in Japan that drives me nuts. The hotel we stayed in was great and we had a fantastic view of Tokyo Tower.  The first day we explored Asa...

Tokyo is the international hub of Japan, so it's not surprising that the city has every kind of international cuisine available.  In fact, it seems that there are more Western and international eateries than Japanese nowadays.  I think Japan is hard to beat in terms of food.  You can get the best of everything, from sushi to pasta to Indian curry to pad thai.  It's the attention to detail and quality of ingredients that make the difference.  Honestly, I've never had a...

First day in Tokyo

In the last few days of my stay in Tokyo, I decided to chill out and not do much.  Monday I got up late, just in time for lunch and I spent the afternoon walking around Ueno, a district not to far from my hostel.  On my way back I walked through the familiar streets of Asakusa, where I normally have dinner, and I came across a big sign advertising a Capsule Hotel.  I remembered reading about these ‘cheap as chips’ coffin-size sleeping rooms for short stays and intrigued by ...

Tokyo is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan, and among the prefectures it is unique in providing certain municipal services characteristic of city. The seat of the Japanese government and the Imperial Palace, and the home of the Japanese Imperial Family, Tokyo is the de facto capital of Japan, the most populous city in the country. The twenty-three special wards of Tokyo, although each administratively a city in its own right, constitute the area informally considered as the "city of ...

Tokyo Disneyland! Tokyo Disneyland! Jana and I have been talking about going to Tokyo Disneyland for a month or two now and we finally went to today. The purpose of the trip was not to ride on the rides but to eat a ton of food and to do some shopping.   I picked Jana up at 5:45 and we headed off to Hitachi-no-Ushiku Station where we JR Joban line for Kashiwa. Once we got to Kashiwa we switched to the JR Joban local line and stayed on that until we got to Shinmatsudo. We switched to th...

I don’t know how often sumo wrestling creeps into the Tokyo tourist’s list of to-dos, but this was my first time. Though I geared up for the momentous occasion (compliments of my father who scored awesome front-row tickets) by downloading Sisqo’s Thong Song, I forgot to crack :) jokes I had prepared once I stepped inside the sumo hall, officially known as Ryogoku Kokugikan.   While Ryogoku Kokugikan qualifies as a stadium it feels small, and what makes the place markedly different f...

Tokyo is ... electric. It is sassy. It is unique. It is modern to the extreme and yet, still ancient in many ways. It is life in fast forward and life wellllll before VCRs existed. It is life in the fast lane and life in the slow lane... but, well, no ... not even. Tokyo has it's own highway. It's own hovercraftway and a bicycle path or something. Tokyo, oh, Tokyo. I haven't words for your splendor.Dear friends, I am obviously blown away by Tokyo, and haven't quite come back to earth just yet...
