Toji-an Guesthouse Kyoto Reviews
Authentic Bed and breakfast in Kyoto May 15, 2010
Toji-an Guesthouse may not be a luxury hostel; you may not have your private room with your own bathroom, or have access to internet.
But Toji-an Guesthouse is one of the most authentic "hostel" you can find in Kyoto, and I would strongly recommend to anyone visiting Kyoto to go there.
It is run by a lovely old man who is always ready to give some tips or just to chat (in japanese, with a few english/spanish/french words).
There are two rooms: one dorm downstairs, with bathroom, for ladies; one room upstairs, for men. The old man lives in the latter, where he prepares breakfast (for free) every morning, and offers alcohol in the evening while watching TV.
For men, there is no bathroom. The toilets are downstairs, and you have to go to the public baths to wash yourself. It's not far from the house, and it's really a nice experience.
The price is 2000yen per night, plus 200yen for the public baths.
I've been staying there for 6nights, and now that I'm back to my usual comfort, I miss "grandpa", his home and the public baths...
