If You are new foreigner in Indonesia the feeling its gonna be different with student foreigner. For this you have to know and adaptation. If you decide to leave your country you must be ready to get something new, like it or not expected at all.

The different between tourist and student, tourist its only passing by, so they will not feel any problems at all with the local people. What they think its only holiday and have fun. But for student, they must to learn how to live with Indonesian culture. So for somebody who want stay as student or just want to stay in Indonesia longer, they must to learn how the people living. Because if you still follow the western life, you cant belong to the local people.example you have to smile when you meet with some one, if not they will think that you are not friendly. When you passing by infront of people that sitting, you have to say excuse me, because its politeness. In other hand you must be tough when the people will call you all the time bule (its mean white people) or Londo (its mean Dutch people). But in Bali its different, because more than 50% the resident is westerent, so the local people didnt call foreigner with that name. In Indonesia bargaining for buying thing it's normal. So dont be shy or afraid to do it. Many people being friendly, but one more think, all around the world its the same, we have to taking care of our self.

I hope its usefull
dkiat says:
Bule actually means Albino (learnt that from the local here).

But you are spot on regarding smiling and saying hello. The locals tend to be more receptive. Otherwise you might come across as a snob :)
