Téléphérique de l'Aiguille du Midi Chamonix-Mont-Blanc Reviews
Téléphérique de l'Aiguille du Midi Jul 31, 2013
At 3,842 m (12,605 ft), the Téléphérique de l'Aiguille du Midi is the second highest cable car lift in europe after the klein matterhorn in switzerland.
aiguille du midi is a massive pyramidal mountain that towers above the valley of chamonix, it's granite rock rises dramatically almost 3 kms from the valley floor.
the téléphérique was built at the summit of aiguille du midi - the highest aiguille (needle peak) that faces the chamonix valley in 1955. it was constructed by alpinist / workers hauling materials and equipment in extreme weather conditions in a very high altitude setting in every light of the day which makes it one of the greatest engineering feats in the world at that time. it was constructed to have easy access / viewpoint nearest to the peak of mont blanc.
at the platforms - it is divided into two sections - the piton nord (where you get out of the lift coming from chamonix) and the piton central where an elevator would take you to the summit of aiguille du midi where you can have a spectacular panorama of the mont blanc massif, italy and switzerland beyond. the pitoncentral also contain the pointe helbronner panoramic cable car that take you across to helbronner in italy, the vallee blanche and dent du géant glaciers and the peaks and the aiguilles of the mont blanc massif that could not be seen from chamonix.
aiguille du midi is also a starting point for mountaineers that wants to scale mont blanc and the other high peaks of the mount blanc massif and the gateway to refuge des cosmiques mountain hut - the most important starting point for climbing mont blanc.
the tickets cost 50 euros return (summer 2013) from chamonix and add another 28 euros return to pointe helbronner, italy. note that in november 4 till december 21 the téléphérique is closed for maintainance.
i really recommend going here to have a once in a lifetime experience, i believe that the spectacular panoramic views, thrilling ride and the experience makes it more worthwhile than the eifel tower in paris. i think the téléphérique de l'aiguille du midi is the number 1 attraction in france but that is just my opinion.
