Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park Cairns Reviews
Tjapukai, a tourist place to learn more about the Aboriginal culture Dec 21, 2010
We spent a day at Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park. We enjoyed our time there. You visit the workshops or activites at your own pace.
At the lectures (on film, at the Creation theater or during the workshops) we learned a lot about the Aboriginal culture (history, customs, bush food and medicine,...). I went there with my 9-year old son. I think it’s a nice family activity.
There’s a lot of other things to do: We started with a didgeridoo workshop (learn to play a didg), then went to the Dance Theatre (saw a show with dance and music). We learned to throw a spear and a boomerang. Both were very difficult. My son got the opportunity to paint a message stone.
We had a picknick in the garden located behind the restaurant.
You could have a cano ride as well but that was payable, so we didn’t do that.
One disadvantage: You just get to throw a spear or boomerang once or twice... so you don’t get the hang of it. When it’s busy, a lot of people are waiting to get a turn, so you are not at ease.
Remember that this is a tourist attraction that is operated by Aborigines. So the tourist stamp prevail.
