This mosque was built in the nineteenth century in honour of Tipu Sultan, who ruled the kingdom of Mysore, by his younger son. Of all the mosques in Kolkata, this has to be amongst the most famous. It is perfectly possible to visit the mosque as a tourist. There was someone at the door where shoes are left, and after explaining that I wished to see the mosque, he gladly showed me around and explained bits about the mosque. It was sad to see some of the original features (such as the lighting) to be covered up from full view, but I suppose this is essential for preservation. It was restored a little around the 1980s, and its rather impressive that the historic building still serves as a fully functioning mosque. The decoration throughout the mosque is nicely done, and I recommend visiting the roof of the mosque for a great bird's eye view of the area. Naturally, it is good to leave a small tip for the “guide”. The mosque sits within the heart of a very old part of Kolkata, and if you are keen to see something more unusual, I would venture out to this area.
