Tipton’s Bar-B-Que Wilkesboro Reviews
Pigging Out May 20, 2016
I adore how impulsive gestures so often yield learning experiences. Tipton’s exuded a “non-chain” atmosphere as I creeped by, so I pulled in for lunch. There were plenty of pigs adorning the restaurant walls and an interesting footnote on the menu. Apparently Tipton’s prides itself on “Lexington style” BBQ, which I knew nothing about. Of course in our inter-connected world I only needed to pull out my phone and Google.
The only 'Lexington' I could place was in Kentucky, but I soon learned there is Lexington, North Carolina too. Despite living in this state for eight years I never realized there are “Lexington” and “Eastern” styles of BBQ. Both are vinegar based (that was the only distinction I knew about NC BBQ), but Lexington limits meat ingredients to pork shoulder. Eastern is much more forgiving, with their meat list spanning “everything including the squeal”.
All that said, I had already ordered their Santa Fe Salad before receiving this enlightenment. The salad was bountiful, served quickly and quite tasty. Add a reasonable price and all I can say is I am ready to return to explore their Lexington style BBQ. The menu is quite expansive, however, so there are plenty of options if you seek something beyond BBQ.
I was mildly impressed with the interior décor, featuring lame (but intentional and fun) piggy wordplay and artwork around popular movies. They actually created faux marquee signs (see pics). Recommended if you need a place to pig out.
