Amsterdam is a beautiful town, but not so packed with typical tourist sights/attractions like, for example, London. The best thing about it is its architecture. I found everything there to be very expensive - from donuts to hostels! Most things are a walking distance (if you like to walk a lot!). Public transport tickets - OV-chipcards are a bit confusing to use and top up. Also, I had problems with buying a train ticket from Schiphol to Central Amsterdam since ticket machines don't accept all types of credit cards and when you go and buy your ticket from the ticket office - you get charged extra! There's a thing with toilets in Amsterdam - public toilets are almost non-existing and when you use a toilet in a cafe or a restaurant (even if you ate there), often you're expected to pay for it. Also, beware of "free" city tours. They're supposed to be free, but then, at the end of the tour, you're expected to tip your guide and you're even told by the guide (and told a whole little story on how they're just students wanting to earn some money...) how much you're expected to tip them (a minimum of 10 euros)! I mean, that's fine since the tour was very informing, but please, don't call it "free". My impression was that nothing is free in Amsterdam.
