Sampling Dublin not Seeing Dublin Apr 18, 2011
Dublin is a place to go to sample not to see. Although it is beautiful with some gorgeous Georgian styled housing, the real trick is to let yourself become immersed within the culture itself. You can do this in two primary ways... meeting the people and drinking the drink.

Now to any non drinkers, you can still get a real Irish experience without it... but you may still need to venture to the pub. The Irish may be known for their love of booze but it's not all about the drink or getting drunk.... it's about the social experience of it all. The live bands, the music, the craic (not as in hang on let me smoke this but Irish for fun) and about having a laugh with friends new and old.

So... Cobblestone Pub on the north side of the city is a super place to see real traditional music instead of the typical tourist stuff. The Quays Bar typical tourist spot is still worth a venture to though for a totally different type of venue. Further south of the River Liffey near Grafton Street and St Stephens Green you'll find more bars and clubs that draw a more local crowd. IF you are looking for the two main clubs that the 'celebrities' go to... look to Crystal and Lillies! And if you want the meat market of Europe... see the ultimate nightlife by visiting Copper Face Jacks. It's the place that packs out Monday to Sunday and no one will ever admit going there.

In terms of Pints of Guinness, you'll get lots of advice on the best place to go... mine is to get yourself to Johnny Foxes the highest pub in Ireland. It is a half an hours drive from the city centre but a great place for a drink, a cultural experience, some fantastic sea food and an opportunity to see traditional Irish dancing on a Saturday night at least.

You have the Guinness Storehouse factory, Book of Kells in Trinity, weird spike yoke, Dublin Castle and lots more tourist spots but Dublin should not just be seen but sampled.
