In Thailand, I would recommend starting off in Bangkok. Going to palace, temples which often are close together and very interesting! People are nice everywhere you go, food is fantastic and everything is cheap. $1000 could live you like a king or queen for a month! That includes spoiling yourself silly! Shopping is great too! Best time to go when the beaches are prime, no crazy rain for days on end, go from November thru March. But..., just like any girl's mood...it can change on a dime! One minute it's fantastic, the next you are running for cover!..(please don't hit me..lol)..
Best area to stay is Sukhumvit (the lower the number the better, example Sukhumvit soi 1 to 63 are good areas. Or try Silom areas as well. Or Petchaburi, Sathorn, Ploenchit areas are good too. They are relatively central, easier to get around! Since you have to fight traffic (unless you catch a mono rail!). Food on the street is safe and yummy, if you must, pick only hot food during hot season if you want to avoid stomach mishaps! But I lived there for almost 20 years and I don't remember getting sick from food. But everyone needs to build immunity to different environment as you know!
But if you love food, you must go there, Thai food in the US or Europe do not do any justice! Rain forest there is awesome too, avoid rainy season though, unless you love having leeches sucking your blood on your legs, in your butt crack,..or paces you dont want them to go..Woooeee!! lol. Shopping is a bargain, they give you a price, you bargain it down at least 30%, they like that!! ;)
THai people are lovely but do not disrespect. They will not tolerate people who push them around in disregard. They appreciate good manners.
Take a train to the north, lots of sceneries to see on the way. Ride Elephant up north in Chiang Mai or Surin, or Chiang Rai. Beaches are super gorgeous and are a must see! Krabi, Koh Tao, Koh Samui (East- in the Gulf of Thailand), James Bond Island, Koh Lan Ta, Phuket. Phuket is a bit too Touristy, but if you go outside of that, it's all great!
Dont waste your time in Pattaya, its dirty! Diving is great too down south. Scuba gear and class is way cheap and you can get PADI or Maui certified while you're there!
Thailand is relatively safe place to visit since the dawnn of time. But these days no matter where you go in the world, it's just not as safe as it used to be. But the key thing is "not to be afraid, but be careful! Big difference ;) You can still have heaps of fun. Just don't put yourself in situation where you added more danger or risk to yourself, especially if you are a girl travelling alone. The further south you go, you'll be close to Malaysia border and there has been lots of kidnapping and disappearance of Caucasian tourists in the past. Violence from Muslim extremists down there. Drugs are everywhere in Thailand. And if you are caught with it, you're pretty much screwed. The jail there is not like in the USA where you get a freaking cable TV, 3 square meals, a nice clean bed and exercise time in the court yard. You willl live in hell with rats, cockroaches (EWWWW), poop and anything else but comfy clean place. That's how they keep down the crime. And it works. Just dont be stupid and go places all by yourself if you are a girl. One mistake and that's it! And I mean anywhere! Thailand is one of the safest places. But still. Have heaps of fun but just dont be stupid! Cheers! Any questions just ask. I'm freaking tired!
Going to sleep now, gonna catch some waves early in the morning! :) Happy travels, travellers! Sa Wad Dee Krab.
