BOOK BEFORE A FREE and PRIVATE visit on arethusa.net Dec 30, 2010
Before you go,book a PRIVATE and FREE visit to some of the locations at least one day prior to the venue on www.arethusa.net and click on Prenotazione.Actually you can visit:
- the Suburban Baths close to the ticket-taker before Porta Marina:you may learn, revise or... remember there thanks to naughty paintings some of your private life...
-and the Casa del Principe di Napoli,a well-preserved house with nice paintings, close to the Casa degli Amorini Dorati.
To enter the locations ask a guard in blue uniform.
The cheapest, safest and quickest(30-40 minutes)way to Pompeii(Pompei is the name of the modern town)is by TRAIN,station Pompeii Scavi using the Circumvesuviana line http://vesuviane.it/web/en/orari or you may now use a bike:there is a 4 km bike path from the Porta Marina to Villa of Mysteries with specially equiped areas.
There is a left luggage desk near the Porta Marina.
Ask for a free map and booklet of the site in different languages at the information desk.
The area is massive, wear comfortable walking shoes, hat in summer because there is a little shade.Take water, there is only a crowded and average cafeteria with busy restrooms at the far end of the forum(other loos at the entrances)
Get up early and if you are a fan of naugthy pictures,go straight to the Lupanare,a very crowded and cramped area.
Don't worry if some of the greatest hits are closed(House of Vetii and House of Menander were closed last week)because there is a lot to see, take your time, for my third visit,I spent 5 hours on the site...
And don't miss the paintings of the Villa of Mysteries!
