The note card technique Jul 02, 2008
It so happened there was a packet of note cards in some babybels I bought- these lead to a fantastic communication devise throughout the proportion of Europe using Latin characters. Basically- write your destination, the train time, a diagram of a man in a bed if you want a sleeper, the train number if you know it, and anything else you can think of (e.g. interrail, how many people). Hand this over to the ticket office, and then begin to carry out any necessary sign language/broken speaking necessary.

It can work, it sometimes doesn't. But its definitely worth a shot if you are having major language issues.
