Fact and legend Dec 06, 2010
Given that Cornwall as a whole is agog with King Arthur stories (Google him if you need to) Tintagel Castle is one of the prime sites for Arthur mania. I do not mean to decry belief that there may have been an ancient (Celtic) king called Arthur but the idea that he had anything to do with the ruined Tintagel castle that can be seen today on a peninsula usually called an island (?)

The castle is from Plantagenet times - the youngest son of King John. The Arthurian legends, as written by Geoffrey of Monmouth and the supposed armour and dress of the knights and maidens fit quite well too - and grand legens they are.

However, if there was a Celtic Arthur, who fought against the Saxons, he was centuries earlier than this There is little doubt that there was a fortification prior to the ruins now to be seen but whether there was anything at real Arthur's time, if he existed, is open to question. However archeological finds, while not conclusively ruling out the doubt, are consistent with a connection between Tintagel and an early Celtic monarch.

If you are able to get down there, revel all you like at the Arthurian legends but do find time to walk about a bit and revel in the beautiful cliffs.

Tintagel Castle sits on an island over looking the ocean. There was a steep climb up some stairs to get to the castle, so if you are older you shouldn't try it. The castle was mostly gone, but the view was sensational at the top. There were descriptions of what places were once in the castle that showed you how the people lived. At the bottom of the island there is a cave that goes through to the other side. It is a very cool looking cave and kids would enjoy going in it. there is also a small beach at the entrance of the cave that you can sit on. On the main land next to the island there is a gift store and a place to eat. It serves normal food and is good. All in all it is a place that children and adults will enjoy.
