Tibet travel budget Jan 04, 2011
Country: Tibet (China)

Period visited: 2010 - 8 nights

Visa cost: $ 58 for 31 day China visa incl. travel permit (embassy in Nepal).

Budget per day: 125 Euro

Actual per day: 87.9 Euro

Why so cheap/expensive?

You can not travel Tibet independently. Budget was based on a tour in 4x4, but I ended up finding a bargain trip for $ 320 for 7 nights, incl transport, accommodation, breakfast, guide and entrance fees.

Can it be cheaper?

I ended up spending more than the $320 because I stayed an extra day in Lhasa + tour. Furthermore I had to prebook a train ticket to Xi'an with a hefty surcharge, but you can only get a visa if you have booked your onwards transportation. So I would say you can't get it much cheaper than this.

Additional info:

Strange as it may seem, a tour booked in Nepal is much cheaper than a tour booked in China. Having said that, it is compulsory to have onwards transportation from Lhasa booked ahead, which costs a small fortune to do from Nepal, so overall both options will cost the same, I suppose.
