Big Buddhas: The Tian Tan Buddha Mar 30, 2011
It took approximately 10 years to cast and complete this enormous bronze seated buddha. It was finished in 1993, and now the great Tian Tan Buddha watches over Lantau Island.
The Tian Tan Buddha is claimed to be the tallest outdoor seated bronze buddha in the world and is called the "Tian Tan" because its base is a replica of Tian Tan, the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.
The Tian Tan Buddha's right hand is raised to remove suffering. His left hand rests on his knee, representing happiness.
Entry to view the Buddha is free. There is a small nominal charge for looking inside the interior halls.
As is Victoria Peak, this is a must if you go to Hong Kong even if just for the view. On a clear, sunny day it is beautiful and well worth the bumpy bus journey even if it does feel like you will go off the cliff!
