The most photoed view of Ghent Sep 10, 2003
Most websites call the view 'The Three Towers of Ghent.' I deliberately omit the definite article because I think it implies that these are the only three towers in Ghent - which they are certainly not. However they do form a magnificent skyscape when viewed from St Michael's Bridge, where you can also enjoy a view of Ghent's historic waterfront. The free designation applies to this external view - I forget whether they all charge for entry but I am sure some do.

The three towers meant here are those of Sint Nicolaas (sic) church, the Belfry and Sint Baaf's Cathedral. The last named is where you can see Van Eyck's 'Adoration of the Mystic Lamb' but for me the best thing of all was in the Belfry - not something old but a lift! It meant that for once I could reach the top of a high building, even though you have to climb practically the height of Everest (perhaps a slight exaggeraton) before you reach it.
