Comfy small hotel May 23, 2015
The hotel located at Oslo city centre near Oslo train station which is handy if you arrive by train to city centre or to go to Oslo airport to catch the flight back home. It is also close to the harbour if you arrive by the cruise ship like me, just walk toward the hotel or city centre.

It is walking distance to many Oslo shopping centre, restaurants, bars, parks and museums. The bus stop to go to the open air museum also close by, located next block on the right side of the hotel.

The reception is professional and the check in was quick. When I arrived early in the morning before 10 am , my room was not ready yet, however I was able to do the check in, fill in the paper form and left my luggage at the hotel. When I came back in the afternoon, I gave the paper back to the reception and he just give the room key and my luggage which was handy.

Plenty of maps and other tour information near the reception desk, and there is free tea or coffee machine 24 hours at the back of the reception room (toward the hotel hallway at the ground floor). There is free computer with internet access to use for hotel guest if you didn’t bring computer.

My room located at the fifth floor with big window toward the street, and the elevator was handy especially with the luggage in tow. The room itself quite basic and small with Ikea furniture budget style, one double bed, flat screen television and a small desk and chair. Free internet in the room and the whole hotel was good as it was fast and reliable. No cupboard inside the room, just a couple of hangers to hang the cloths.

The bathroom is small and very basic, and the whole floor get wet after shower. However, plenty of fresh towels, toiletries, and hairdryer available inside the room and the cleaner clean and change the towels daily.

There were a slight noise when other guests arrive as I can hear the door banging when open or closing the door. However it was quite at night time and the bed was comfortable.

The best part of the hotel was the buffet breakfast where the breakfast room located at the back of the hotel building. It was soo many selections from cold dishes of cold cut meat – salami, pork, salad, cereal, cheese, etc, to the warm dishes of fish, potatoes, scramble eggs, sausages and the special Norway cheese which taste strangely like a chewy sweet candy. It was quite busy during breakfast time however the staff was efficient and refill whatever need to and no empty plates stay longer. I eat a lot during breakfast time and still full at lunch time.

If you are not after a luxury, this is good budget hotel in expensive Oslo city as this hotel chain is on the budget side of Astoria hotel.

not too expensive and nicely renovated Jan 15, 2010
Last January I extended my business trip to Oslo with one more night on my own account and chose the Thon Astoria for its price and location.

The hotel is located in a bit shabby looking side street just off Karl Johansgatan, the main shopping street. It's only about 5 minutes' walk to the railway station, which is very convenient if you have to walk through the snow and winter cold.

The lobby is small and looks not very inviting, but the staff was very efficient and helpfull.

I got a spacious room on the first floor. The room was only recently renovated and had nice bright minimalistic Nordic design. There even was an extra bed and plenty of space to move about.

The bathroom however, with frosted glass door(!), is on the small side with an equally narrow shower. Luckily I had the room to myself as it would be awkward to share a close to zero privacy bathroom with someone who's not a spouce.

My room at the street side was rather noisy and so where the party kids staying the hotel. Though nothing some earplugs couldn't solve.

Getting to the breakfast room was quite an endeaver as massive renovation work is going on at the premises. However the breakfast room is inviting, spacious and nicely redone in Nordic design.

There was a nice and extensive Scandinavian buffet breakfast that's definitely worth the extra money. There are also papers and magazines available for solo travellers.

Check-out was equally smooth and I was rewarded with a chocolate bar to continue ly travels.

All in all a not too expensive place (in Norwegian standards) to crash for the night. Pleasant room and breakfast room but too noisy to be tops.

In Oslo it is worth knowing a decent hotel which is not too terribly overpriced. Thanks - I may get around to using this hotel.

Thon Hotel Astoria Overview

Thon Hotel Astoria is a cosy budget-hotel in downtown Oslo. It is located only 50 metres from the main street Karl Johan, in close proximity to everything the city has to offer. Shopping, galleries, museums, restaurants and nightlife are just minutes away. The hotel is easily accessible with public transportation, and is only a short 5 minute walk from Oslo Central Station.

The Astoria has 180 comfortable guest rooms, most of them facing towards the back. Due to the very central location you may experience some city noise as traffic and music from bars. 50 of the rooms are brand new, and were opened January 7th 2008. All are equipped with hairdryer, telephone and television, and all have private bathrooms with showers. The hotel does not offer minibars or pay-tv, but refreshments and snacks can be purchased from the vending machines in the lobby. There are 6 free tv-channels, also international. In addition to the standard rooms, the hotel offers a few smoking rooms, rooms without carpet, and family rooms. Wireless Internet is available in the entire hotel, also in the breakfastroom.
