Mycenaen Tholos Tomb .... in Tiryns area! Apr 22, 2013
When David first began driving (after our sleepless 23 hrs of air travel) we decided we would go to any places that had sites and we agreed we would watch for the signs. Sadly, I wasn't able to help watch for signs as I kept falling asleep.

We stopped for coffee at a restaurant near the Corinth canal. Coffee and a salad. It was quite nice sitting in the shade watching the canal area. We hoped a boat would go by but no such luck.

We passed the Ancient site of Tiryns and talked about what an unusual place it was to visit.... after we passed I realized there was a brown sign pointing past the site. David patiently turned around and we drove back to the intersection. We followed the road and turned into an orange grove. The road was full of huge rocks and pits .... but it was fun driving through the orchard ... Or is it a grove if it's oranges?.... hmmmm

The road dead-ended suddenly. There was a walkway with a sign pointing out. We followed the path and were astonished to see a key hole opening like a Mycenaen bee hive tomb. Oh my gosh! They exist outside of Mycenae??!! I even braved the huge number of bees to walk down into the tomb. The entrance door was huge stones stacked supporting an immense stone ....

Above us loomed the ceiling .... rounded and set with stones... there was a hole in the side of the top that made me a little nervous as I was afraid the integrity of the tomb might be compromised. There was also a hole dug in the floor. We decided that was probably not supposed to be there. There was a huge stone with a bowl carved in the top of it. We had no idea what it had been used for in antiquity.

All in all we loved this site. It was was undeveloped (no signage other than the name) and it was remote but it was really interesting to see. We plan on going back on a future trip to Greece. We saw quite a few beehive tombs but this one was the best!
