Theatre Royal Haymarket London Reviews
Theatre Royal Haymarket Jan 17, 2011
The Haymarket Theatre Royal is a theatre in London on the edge of Westminster.
It is another little jewel box of a theatre, with a painted ceiling, lovely
chandeliers, and lots of gold leaf. It’s very nice. When I was there, I was
seeing a production of The Rivals and the sound quality was great, as was my
view from the Royal Circle.
The extra good thing about my view from the Royal Circle was that I had paid for
seats in the (much cheaper) gallery. They had obviously not sold out that
evening and when I picked up my tickets I was given tickets for the Royal Circle
instead. This is an extremely sensible policy that meant I had a comfier seat
with better line of sight, and the actors only had to project to the circle.
The play was hilarious, and very good, and will almost certainly be over by the
time you read this, so I will stick to reviewing the facilities. The toilets
are clean. The icecream is good, if slightly more expensive than the National,
and I did not bother getting a drink so I can’t tell you about the bar. The
staff were all smiles and helpfulness. The only faint thing to observe is that
this is an old building, and I think that if you had mobility problems you might
struggle a little. I didn’t see lifts and the toilets were narrow. I could be
wrong, but it would be worth phoning ahead and checking facilities if you are
likely to need help.
I would like to see more plays here. As with most London theatres, the cheapest ways to get tickets are either to book the cheap seats months in advance, or queue up at 6.30pm and hope for the best. The lovely couple next to me were retired and had done the queuing up thing - online works better for me - but we both paid about £20 and liked our seats.
The nearest tube stations are probably Piccadilly Circus or Leicester Square.
