Theatre International Hostel Apr 06, 2014
Finally there is a cheap and solid hostel in Guatemala City… Theatre International Hostel is the first hostel that has normal price (less than 10$) for Guatemala. I never understood why most of the hostels in the capital cost over 15$ and honestly they are not worth repeating the stay. I used to go to Antigua and stay there instead of doing overnight in Guatemala City…

Anyway Theatre hostel is located close to the downtown (I believe that it is zone 1 or 9), pretty much walking distance. It is not difficult to get there because there is Metro bus line stopping 50 meters from the hostel, and you can connect to these metro buses from the most of the terminals or other parts of the town.

This place is brand new, it was opened just few months ago and it is not running perfectly well yet, but there are good elements that are promising. Stuff that works in the hostel is a bit lost and has no or very little experience with working in the hostel. They seem to be confused with everything you ask them.

Entrance to hostel is marked very poorly and you will need to know the address in order to knock on the right door.

Building is in the back of the beautiful old theatre and I think that owner is a son of the guy that runs the theatre or something like that because there are doors that connect both places. Also some of the staff has shirts from the theatre. Security is pretty good and they have cameras covering all the entrances. There is someone at the reception or in the staff room at any time during the day or night.

There is lots of space in this hostel and it is not really well used. I think that they still don’t have much money to invest in filling up the rooms with beds and equipment, but there is one large dormitory and few “private” rooms. Dormitory is right next to the street so it can be a bit noisy, especially in the morning. Beds are horrible. Double decker beds that are not larger than 190cm, wooden, shaking and on the top of everything they placed soft beds that are collapsing and that they are very uncomfortable. There is only one restroom in huge space, total waste of resources. Water is cold, but there is hot shower head on the shower. Must be that it was broken when I was in town.

Private rooms are eerie, with lots of space and a bed in the middle of the room. Well it is a beginning…

WiFi is available and also there are 5 (five) lockers that you can use. I scored one as soon as I got in heheh

Building has covered passage going around two courtyards. Courtyard in the front is nice and made to be chill out place with a hammock and sitting places around, and back one is where they clean things and it is small. Kitchen is good, big, with lots of things to use, good stove and refrigerator. We had fun making dinner in that place.

Owner is a young guy and he is passionate about this project. It looks like this is going to be a place to go to in the future ( I hope that they will change those beds somehow…)
