Theater Carré, located in Amsterdam, is the most famous theater of The Netherlands. It has a rich history and all of the great names of Dutch performers have given a show here. The venue is quite versatile. I has been used to host circuses, musicals, stand-up comedians, plays, singers and bands, opera's and so on.
Built in 1887, it was originally intended as an indoor winter circus for the circus family Carré. Over the years more and more acts were performed there and in 1987 it got its Royal status.
The architecture of the venue is very impressive, part of the roof construction designed by Eiffel, yep, him from the tower in Paris. The double mirrored bar/foyer is beautiful and looks like a ballroom. Nevertheless, it can be very crowded during the interval. In the foyer you'll also find access to the balcony, the only place where smoking is allowed. The wardrobe is cheap (0,50 euro).
When in Amsterdam, check out what's playing at Carré. If it is something you like, make sure you go there, because Carré is well worth a visit.
