The ostrich Utrecht Reviews
Nov 30, 2007
The Ostrich is an African restaurant on the canal in Utrecht. Its menu has a statement that they try to create recipes that reflect Africa as a modern, vibrant continent rather than a set of stereotypes - I've not been to Africa and that sounds like a real challenge given the number of cultures that they must be talking about, but the food was excellent.
There is a vegetarian section on the menu, but we went there for the chance to eat crocodile (filed under fish on the menu) and other interesting animals. The food was excellent, and came quickly. It was really nicely cooked and well seasoned. The salad was crunchy and well dressed, the desserts were quite nice and there is a long menu of imported African beers. You drink the fruit beers out of coconuts, which is fun, if a bit worrying given the strength of some of the beers on offer!
The restaurant is on the canal, so it is a lovely cozy atmosphere. There is lots of interesting arty stuff on the walls and in display cases on the way in. This would be a great place to have a special occasion, although it's worth noting that there is nothing on the menu for any picky eaters who don't like new things (you know, the ones who order fried chicken and chips when you go for a curry, poor things).
We had a shared starter, three main courses, a dessert each, and drinks, and it came to 40€ each, which isn't bad at all for such lovely food. I would definately go back.
