The old temple of Nalanda Reviews
The old temple of Nalanda Sep 12, 2011
The main (only?) attraction in the small village of Nalanda is the ancient Hindu temple which is a bit outside the town. It is a small sight and you will probably see it all in less than 30 minutes - hence it is best visited as a daytrip from a nearby location. I stayed in Dambulla which is only a short way away from this temple you can catch one of the frequent buses going between Dambulla and Matale or Kandy. Ask the conductor on the bus to let you off at the temple in Nalanda and he will tell you when you get there. From the road it is only about a kilometer of walking to the temple.
When you get to the temple there may or may not be somebody selling tickets - you can buy a ticket for $5 which is too much for this place - you really should only go if you got sufficient time and have already bought the cultural triangle entrance pass in which the temple at Nalanda is included. When I got there the ticket booth was deserted but there was somebody responsible for the area at the temple itself. He checked my cultural triancle pass and let me in.
There really aren’t a lot to see here - only a small temple and an old dagoba. The temple is from somewhere between 8th and 11th century - it doesn’t seem like anybody really knows for sure. The temple was deserted at some point in time and became a ruin. The temple was rebuilt from the rubbles back in 1975 and now you can visit it. Next to the temple is a small grassland area with a lake which is actually a pretty nice setting. The temple doesn’t seem to attract many individual travelers so you will have a decent change to be the only one visiting when you get there. Though for some unknown reason it seems like this temple is a destination on some group tours of Sri Lanka I don’t really understand why - but there was a pretty big French group arriving at the sight just as I was about to leave.
