The old fish market in Tartu Reviews
The old fish market in Tartu Feb 06, 2009
Just next to the river in Tartu and behind the new Dorpat Hotel and conference centre the old fish market is situated. The market resembles any other market in ant small eastern European city but is a vital part of the local folklore. I have always enjoyed coming these places because if there is one place where you can look and feel the local culture and food traditions it is here.
The fish market revealed to me some new usage of some fishes that I hadn’t seen before. I manage to buy some for later tasting together with my girlfriends mother who really enjoys fish.
One of the things I got with I really liked as a snack was some salty dried long treads of fish which had been wind dried. It was far away from the dried fish you get from Norway or Iceland. I could imagine that the fish treads also would have been great together with cold beer in the summer time – not to forget that the next time I go there.
