The mountain lake - Bachalpsee Grindelwald Reviews
The mountain lake - Bachalpsee Jun 18, 2012
Located at an altitude of 2,265 m (7,431 ft), the mountain lake of the bachalpsee is truly a majestic sight to behold! the 2 tiered lake is surrounded by mountains - the higher bernese alps and lower mountain range of the bernese alps (also called the voralpen). it is one of the 2 mountain lakes in the berner oberland that is over 2000 meters in elevation the other one is grauseeli at over 2500 meters.
the lake is divided by a natural damn with green pastures that are used by cows in late spring (when the snow thaws and summer). there are many spots for picnic and resting - in fact there are 2 mountain huts in the area but there are no toilets. they are only used by dedicated hikers that do the hut-to-hut trekk across the bernese alps.
the lake is cold and only in high summer that it is snow free - but what i find peculiar about the lake - is that there are some species of plants and algae that thrive below it and suprisingly - there are small fishes that live on the lake!
the trail going to bachalpsee is easy coz theres not much gain in elevation - only about 300 feet from the starting point of the hike but sad to say - it is very expensive to get here - from interlaken you take the mountain train to grindelwald and from grindelwald take the cable car up to first station (the starting point of the hike) and would cost 70 chf (2012 price) but if you want to save money - you can hike from grindelwald until first and then to bachalpsee - which takes time, effort and energy and you have to do it very early because the last cable car going down is at 5 pm.
all in all - i really recommend hiking up here - the hike is only about 7 kms retour from first station and you will see aside from the mountain lake of the bachalpsee: the tallest peak of the bernese alps - the finsteraarhorn at 4,274m (14,022 ft) and for me the most beautiful peak of the bernese alps - the beautiful north face of the schreckhorn - 4,078 m (13,379 ft) but the icing on the cake (if i say so myself) about the bachalpsee - is when the air is still - it would mirror the mighty peaks of the bernese alps - specially the north face of the schreckhorn!
