Venice itself is great for at least a full day. There is plenty to see and finding your way around will keep you busy. Unless you're great at getting around, you will get lost at some point! Near St. Mark's Basilica and the Bridge of Sighs, there was a little kiosk that does tours of some of the islands around Venice. I decided for 19 euro that I would do the tour, which took about half a day and went to three islands. The first island on the tour is Murano. This island is very famous for making glass, and included in the cost of the tour you will see them making some of this famous glass. When finished, you'll have the option of walking around the island a bit or spending time in the shop looking at all the incredible works. From Murano, the boat goes to Burano (I am not sure who came up with the names). Burano is famous for it's lace, and you will again be able to see how lace is made. Also, Burano is known as a fishing village and you will have the opportunity to see the colored houses in town and hear the story about them. The last island on the tour is Torcello, a now uninhabited island. There stands a church and some neat scenery, and there is some history here that you will hear about. All this is neat and you get to go out on the water for a while. Makes for a great afternoon!

I agree! The islands of Venice are great!! Honestly...I could spend over a week exploring Venice and it's islands! We actually didn't take a tour, but took public transportation to the islands with our 72 hour pass and we got a free ride to Murano from one of the factory boats that go back and forth and saw a free glass making show which was cool. Great review!

Torrecello & the Cemetrey May 10, 2008
Don't forget to buy a 3 day tourist pass when visiting Venice this will allow you to travel on transport 24/7 for the 3 days.. IT WILL SAVE YOU APPROX: 80% on normal fare costs...
Also travel is very safe during the day light hours-- DON'T TRAVEL ON THE TRAIN IN VENICE--- AT ANYTIME !!!!!!
Mestro is cheaper for accommadation & has all facilities.. also use- verene.com for accommation I found it very cheap.
Don't forget to visit the island of Torrecello it has great food & is rich in history, the Cemetrey is also worth a visit & it's also rich in history.. when buy Manrado Glass, ask 4 a certificate of authenticity- so you don't get ripped off...
MOST OF ALL DON'T FORGET -- THAT SUNDAY IS A HOLY DAY IN ITALY & TRY NOT 2 TRAVEL ON SUNDAY - if you must travel on Sunday-- DOUBLE CHECK ALL YOPUR TRAVEL AGRANGEMENTS - because I got got caught out badly and it cost me a lot of extra money to travel on Sunday..

TRY TO PLAN YOUR ARRIVAL TIMES -- SO YOU ARRIVE DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS IN ITALY---

ALSO (1) DON"T LET THE TAXI DRIVERS TRY TO RIP YOU OFF
(2) USE THE TRAIN or BUS FROM THE AIRPORT ITS FAR -- CHEAPER
